Wildlife Awareness & Safety in Whispering Hills

Living in Whispering Hills means sharing our beautiful natural surroundings with a variety of wildlife, including bears and cougars. While sightings are rare, it's important to be prepared and informed to ensure both human and animal safety.

Bear Safety

Bears are typically shy and avoid human contact, but they can be attracted to food sources. To minimize the risk of encounters:

  • Secure attractants: Store garbage, pet food, and bird feeders securely.
  • Be vigilant outdoors: Make noise while hiking to avoid surprising a bear.
  • Carry bear spray: Have it accessible and know how to use it.
  • Supervise children and pets: Keep them close, especially at dawn and dusk.

Cougar Safety

Cougars are elusive but may be present in forested areas. To reduce the risk of an encounter:

  • Stay alert: Be aware of your surroundings, especially in wooded areas.
  • Keep pets leashed: Unattended pets can attract predators.
  • Avoid hiking alone: Travel in groups when possible.
  • Respond appropriately: If you encounter a cougar, stay calm, make yourself appear larger, and back away slowly.
