Boat Safety on Baptiste Lake

Spending time on the water is one of the best parts of lake life in Whispering Hills—but with that comes the responsibility to ensure that everyone stays safe, respectful, and compliant with boating regulations.

Whether you're cruising, tubing, fishing, or paddling, it's important to be aware of your surroundings and follow basic boating rules to help protect people, property, and the natural environment.

Before You Head Out:
  • Check your safety gear. Every boat must carry approved life jackets for each person on board, a sound-signaling device (like a whistle), a buoyant heaving line, and a bailer or manual pump.
  • Know your limits. Don’t operate a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Inspect your vessel. Make sure your boat is in good working condition, and check fuel levels and weather conditions before departure.
While on the Water:
  • Respect speed limits. Operate at safe speeds, especially near the shore and in narrow channels.
  • Watch for swimmers, paddlers, and smaller vessels. Keep a safe distance and reduce your wake around others.
  • Be courteous. Loud music, excessive wake, or aggressive driving can disturb wildlife and other lake users.
  • Avoid shoreland erosion. High-speed boating close to shore can damage fragile riparian areas.
    Boat Launch Etiquette:

Be prepared before entering the launch area—load your gear, check straps, and ready your boat away from the ramp.
Launch and retrieve efficiently to avoid delays for others.

Do not park at the launch area—move your vehicle to a designated parking space once you're on the water.
Know the Rules

Boating regulations are enforced under the Canada Shipping Act, and all operators are required to carry a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC). For full regulations and safety tips, visit:
