Shorelands & Riparian Areas: Protecting Our Lake’s Edge
The natural shoreline around Baptiste Lake is one of our most valuable and sensitive environmental features. These areas—known as shorelands and riparian zones—play a critical role in maintaining water quality, preventing erosion, and supporting fish and wildlife habitats.
In Whispering Hills, we all share the responsibility of protecting these delicate ecosystems.
What Are Riparian Areas?
Riparian areas are the green, vegetated zones next to the lake. They act as natural filters, helping to trap sediment and pollutants before they enter the water. They also stabilize the shoreline and provide essential habitat for birds, amphibians, and aquatic species.
How You Can Help:
- Leave native plants undisturbed. Avoid mowing, clearing, or altering vegetation along the shore.
- Minimize hard surfaces like patios or walls near the water’s edge. These increase runoff and reduce natural absorption.
- Use caution with fertilizers or chemicals—what goes on your lawn often ends up in the lake.
- Avoid removing rocks or logs from the shoreline—they provide structure and habitat for aquatic life.
- Don’t disturb wetlands or marshy areas—they're essential to lake health and are protected under provincial regulations.
Building Near the Shore
If you're planning any kind of construction, landscaping, or dock installation near the water, contact the CAO first to ensure compliance with provincial regulations and municipal bylaws. Many shoreline activities require approval from Alberta Environment and Protected Areas.
Let’s all do our part to protect the beauty and health of Baptiste Lake. A healthy shoreline today means a thriving lake for generations to come.
