Living among the trees and by the lake is part of what makes Whispering Hills so special—but it also means we need to be extra mindful about wildfire risks. By taking a few simple precautions, we can all help keep our homes, our forest, and our neighbors safe.

The FireSmart program is a nationally recognized initiative that provides practical, common-sense steps to reduce the risk of wildfire damage to properties and communities. Here are some key ways you can do your part:

Around Your Property

  • Clear leaves, needles, and debris from gutters, decks, and under steps.
  • Store firewood and other flammable materials at least 10 metres away from your home or sheds.
  • Trim trees and shrubs to create space between branches and remove deadfall or dry brush from your yard.
  • Mow your grass regularly and keep it short, especially near buildings.
  • Use fire-resistant materials for decks, fences, and exterior finishes when building or renovating.

Be Smart With Fire

  • Never leave campfires unattended, and make sure they are completely extinguished—soak it, stir it, soak it again.
  • Follow any local fire bans or restrictions issued during dry conditions.
  • Use spark arresters on ATVs or equipment when operating near dry vegetation.
