As we have a number of residents who are not paying their property taxes within the deadline of July 31st each year, council has decided to increase the penalty for late taxes to 18% beginning in January of 2020. This is an increase of 3%. We realize that this is a steep penalty but it is important that we get these taxes on a yearly basis in order to budget for the following year.
For anyone who owes taxes, it is in your best interest to pay them each year as the penalties add up quickly. After the second year of non payment there will be a caveat placed on your property and after the third year of unpaid taxes, the property is subject to the tax recovery process which could lead to the village claiming it and selling it.
